>> China Trade Briefing 2010  The latest China Trade Briefing report from MDS Transmodal highlights key trends in China's containerised import and export trades with near term quarterly predictions for 2010 and 2011.  Although the last 18 months have seen the container markets fall in spectacular fashion, still the words "double-digit growth" have not left the shipping industry's parlance as far as China is concerned.  The China Trade Briefing report shows why.  As well as looking at broad trends in imports and exports the report provides specific details on China's container trades with trading partners and particular commodity groups, drilling down to SITC 5 digit level in some cases.

>>As the world awaits a rebound, we examine the world trade in cars and maritime trade in containerised motor vehicle parts using data generated by the MDS Transmodal World Cargo Database.  The development of each of these trades is monitored from 1996 and in detail from Q1 2007 to Q2 2009 with projections generated by the World Cargo Database to 2020.  These currently suggest that whereas the decline will ease in 2010, it will not be until the latter half of 2011 that an upturn will become evident on a world scale.  Click here to access the article 'Car Trades Tracked'.

For over 20 years MDS Transmodal has been a key source of specialist information on containerships and their deployment, liner services and forecasts of capacity.

Containership Databank

The Databank enables us to produce bespoke analyses of the world's container carrying fleet of over 9000 vessels. For every vessel currently in service, the Databank provides over 35 fields of information including operational information such as:

  • operator of the vessel
  • service on which vessel is deployed
  • frequency of the service
  • route of the service
  • port rotation of the service
  • number of vessels in the service

and physical information such as:

  • vessel type
  • nominal TEU capacity of the vessel
  • deadweight
  • reefer slot capacity
  • service speed
  • year of build
  • yard of build

Additionally, the Databank includes information about vessels on order and vessels removed from the commissioned fleet.

The service deployment of individual vessels in the fleet frequently changes. The Databank tracks these changes and is continually updated. The Databank has been produced since 1985 thus enabling a wide range of historical analyses to be undertaken.

Container Capacity Forecast (CCF)

The Container Capacity Forecast (CCF) builds on the information in the Containership Databank to provide a three-year prediction, by quarter, of vessel deployment on individual services on the main arterial routes -

  Transpacific, Transatlantic and Europe/Far East

Some sophisticated features are included, such as weighout factors applied to the deadweight trades and capacity allocation by sector on multi-sector itineraries. The CCF takes account of all known vessels on order in developing the forecasts and also the impact of vessel displacement, as the "cascade effect" shifts vessels from route to route.

The output of the CCF consists of summary tables for each route, eastbound and westbound separately, by service string. In addition, a list of route allocation factors applied is provided together with a brief commentary by service on vessel deployment and redeployment.
