The Question
How to estimate the bunker consumption for a container ship for any given route and for any given ship size
The Solution
MDST developed a generic formula for the client, based on the calculations included in the MDS Transmodal Container Business Model, which estimates the costs, revenues and utilisation of the world’s container shipping services.
Outcome
The formula provided to the client was used by Hapag-Lloyd to develop its Marine Fuel Recovery (MFR) mechanism, which provides a transparent means to calculate a Bunker Adjustment Factor (BAF).
MDS Transmodal subsequently used the formula to develop its BAF Calculator web application, which allows the user to estimate the bunker cost per TEU for container shipping services offered on the key global trade lanes.
