The extent of industry consolidation since 2006 is undeniable with seven lines controlling 72% of global capacity in 2006 but only three alliances controlling 84% of capacity in 2019. However, does the data on demand and supply, on unit costs and freight rates for container shipping suggest the lines have been able to take advantage of the increasing concentration of supply in the market?
