Biography

Mark brings over 40 years of experience in construction materials supply chain and logistics, covering all modes of transport. Throughout his career at Cemex, Mark championed the modal shift to rail, sea and inland waterway to create greater efficiencies, customer satisfaction and more sustainable methods of transport in support of the company’s wider sustainability objectives.

Mark is deeply passionate about safety in the freight environment, particularly the interface at wharfs and railheads and the distinctive safety requirements that present themselves within the rail and waterway sector. He was instrumental in developing Cemex's global rail safety standards, representing Cemex’s EMEA region, and supported the continued growth in Cemex’s rail transportation activities.

While working at Cemex he was responsible for the transport of 3 million tonnes of aggregates per annum (20% modal share), involving 40 weekly trains on 20 routes and to 14 destination depots. He managed a £15 million budget to secure more than 500,000 rail km per annum, avoiding 150,000 HGV movements and saving 17,500 tonnes of CO2e per annum.

Mark is a Non-Executive Director of Logistics UK and sits on its Rail & Water Freight Councils, as well as being a member of the Construction Forum of the Rail Freight Group.
