DG MOVE, European Commission: Study on Urban Freight Transport

Client: European Commission’s Directorate-General for Mobility & Transport (DG MOVE)

Date: 2011-2012
To review existing and planned practices and measures relating to urban freight distribution, and provide conclusions and practical recommendations on the potential role of the European Union in the area of urban freight distribution.

The Question

What role can the European Union have in promoting the sustainable urban distribution of goods?

The Solution

MDST, in association with the Centro di ricerca per il Trasporto e la Logistica (CTL) at Sapienza University of Rome, provided best practice recommendations as a result of their study which involved:
  • Conducting secondary research on, and analysis of, practices and measures in Europe that aim to secure urban distribution;
  • Visits to ten European cities to observe the mix of measures being employed;
  • Consultation  meetings with industry representative organisations at a European level;
  • Computer simulation modelling of urban freight transport in a specific city (Rome).

Outcome

The report was published by the European Commission in 2012 and has been cited by over 50 research papers.
