North Sea Mediterranean Core Network Corridor

North Sea Mediterranean Core Network Corridor

Client: DG MOVE, European Commission

Date:2014 - 2020
DG MOVE commissioned MDS Transmodal, as part of a pan-European consortium, to provide advice on transport infrastructure in Ireland and the UK that is located on the Trans-European Network (TEN-T) North Sea Mediterranean Corridor so that the EU could develop a Work Plan for the corridor’s future development.

The Question

What are the characteristics of the road, rail, port, intermodal terminal and airport infrastructure on the alignment of the North Sea Mediterranean Corridor in Ireland and the UK? To what extent does the infrastructure meet the requirement of TEN-T standards? What projects are being implemented on the corridor to meet these requirements?

The Solution

  • Defined the alignment of the North Sea Mediterranean Corridor in Ireland and the UK and analysed the extent to which the infrastructure already met the TEN-T standards for 2030
  • Liaised with the two Member States to develop and then update a list of projects that would allow the infrastructure to meet or surpass the requirements of the TEN-T standards by 2030
  • Contribute to analysis of passenger and freight demand on the corridor for Ireland and the UK
  • Present the results at periodic Corridor Fora in Brussels and Working Groups around North West Europe
  • Provide on-going updates, in collaboration with the Member States, on the progress of projects towards completion
  • Provide briefings to DG MOVE officials through a monthly digest of press articles and ad hoc briefings in advance of missions to Ireland and the UK.

Achievements

The work has been published in three Work Plans for the EU, which set out an on-going plan for the enhancement and development of new transport infrastructure on the corridor up to 2030 and beyond.
