Where does the Port of Liverpool’s traffic go to and come from inland? Which inland modes of transport are used?
The Solution
Provided an origin-destination (OD) matrix from the Great Britain Freight Model (GBFM) for HGV and rail freight flows to and from the Port of Liverpool by mode of appearance (LOLO, RORO and bulk)
Assigned the HGV & rail freight flows to the highway and railway networks to help visualise the flows
Provided the same data for the port’s key competitors in the LOLO and RORO markets
Provided some analysis of the potential for additional intermodal rail freight services to/from the Port of Liverpool
Estimated the number of RORO units that are likely to be landbridging between Ireland and the European continental mainland via the Port of Liverpool
Produced a technical report describing the deliverables & the methodology employed
Outcome
Outputs from GBFM were incorporated into the Liverpool City Region Transport Model and the data provided a baseline for the Combined Authority’s own work on the potential for modal switch from road to rail.
