The value of goods passing through UK ports

The value of goods passing through UK ports

Client: Associated British Ports (ABP)

Date:2016
ABP commissioned MDS Transmodal to estimate the value of imports and exports that are handled at UK ports.

The Question

What is the value of the imports and exports that are handled through UK ports? Which ports handle the cargo with the greatest value?

The Solution

  • Established the value per tonne of cargo contained in VAT returns (for trade with the EU) and customs declarations (for trade with the rest of the world) to establish generic values per tonne for imports and exports
  • Calculated the value of international traffic passing through individual major UK ports.
  • Reconciled the UK’s total physical trade in goods, including that which is handled by air, through the Channel Tunnel and across the Irish Land border, to the National Accounts.

Achievements

A summary of the report was published by ABP and showed that £511bn of physical trade was handled at UK ports in 2014, of which £318bn related to trade with the EU and £193bn with the rest of the world.
