Transport issues facing the Scottish food & drink industry in the UK and in emerging international markets

Client: Scottish Enterprise

Date: 2013
Scottish Enterprise commissioned MDST to analyse existing export flows and examine the issues that affect the transport of Scottish food and drink exports to international markets.

The question

What are the main transport-related issues affecting exporters of food and drink from Scotland and how can public sector intervention mitigate against them?

The solution

  • Analysed trade statistics for Scottish food and drink exports in 2012 and developed forecasts by volume up to 2017.
  • Established the routes used by Scottish food and drink exporters to transport their products to EU and non-EU markets.
  • Carried out consultation with key stakeholders via a workshop in Edinburgh and further interviews with key stakeholders in the Scottish food and drink industry.
  • Calculated the estimated GHG emissions associated with the transport of these food and drink exports in 2012 and 2017.
  • Set out the main market-based and policy-based issues that are likely to affect the transport of Scottish food and drink up to 2017.
  • Developed recommendations for action by the public sector in Scotland.
