Understanding Coastal Shipping and Inland Waterway Transport
Client: : UK Department for Transport
Date:2018-19
The Department for Transport commissioned MDST to complete a research study on coastal shipping and inland waterway transport in response to a recommendation included in its Port Connectivity Study.
The Question
To what extent can coastal shipping and inland waterway transport secure additional modal share up to 2050 and how can the public sector assist in removing barriers to the further development of the two modes?
The Solution
- Developed the evidence base through data analysis, literature review and a stakeholder interview programme
- Considered the barriers to greater take-up of the relevant mode and the development and appraisal of policy options to address them
- Forecast and modelled flows transported by coastal shipping and inland waterway transport under a range of scenarios up to 2050 using the GB Freight Model, a multimodal freight demand simulation model
Achievements
Research study completed.
