Urban Logistics Centre for Greater Manchester: The Initial Business Case

Urban Logistics Centre for Greater Manchester: The Initial Business Case

Client: Innovate UK

Date: 2014
To carry out an initial assessment of the economic and technical feasibility of a large-scale freight consolidation centre in Greater Manchester involving electric vehicles for “last mile” deliveries.

The Question

What social, economic, and technical aspects should be considered in the study of an urban logistics centre in Greater Manchester?

The Solution

MDST carried out a study which involved:
  • Market analysis and modelling of the amount of freight traffic that could be attracted to a network of urban logistics centres (ULCs) in Greater Manchester;
  • Assessment of the regulatory environment in Manchester and Salford within which deliveries take place and potential policy/regulatory measures that could be introduced to encourage use of the ULC;
  • Reviewing of cost modelling and its wider socio-economic benefits.

Outcome

A report with a summary of results was produced for Innovate UK, and a briefing paper produced for Greater Manchester Chief Executives.
