Warrenpoint masterplan

Warrenpoint Masterplan

Client: Warrenpoint Harbour Commissioners (in association with SLR Consulting)

Date: 2016-2017
As part of a master planning process to identify strategic options for both the long and medium term development of the port, MDST was commissioned to produce 35 traffic forecasts for the port of Warrenpoint in Northern Ireland.

The question

What are the likely future commodities and volumes of cargoes that the port would need to accommodate over a 35 year time horizon?

The solution

  • Interviewed major stakeholders in Warrenpoint and the hinterland of the port in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
  • Analysed vessel size trends in all market sectors.
  • Developed roro and lolo forecasts (Central, High and Low) using the MDST trade forecasting model.
  • Developed non-unitised traffic forecasts, based on MDST’s trade forecasting model and, where appropriate, statistical correlations between traffic flows through the port and changes in the output of economic sectors such as the construction industry in Ireland.

The impact

A Port Masterplan, with traffic forecasts and strategic options for both the long and medium term development of the port, was published in November 2017.
