Yorkshire and the Humber trading relationships

Yorkshire and the Humber trading relationships

Client: : West Yorkshire Combined Authority

Date:2020
MDST was commissioned to provide evidence-based analysis of Yorkshire and the Humber’s trade in physical goods with the rest of the world in the context of the UK’s departure from the EU.

The Question

Which export commodities do the four Yorkshire and Humber LEP areas specialise in and what are the key opportunities for additional trade given the UK’s departure from the European Union?

The Solution

  • Reviewed the trading policy landscape, focusing on UK policy towards Brexit and international trade and potential tariff regimes after 31 December 2020
  • Presented data on trade in goods for the region compared to the UK as a whole
  • Highlighted the export commodities in which the region specialises
  • Broke down the regional trade into trade by LEP area and individual district, based on an estimation technique
  • Used data from the MDST World Cargo Database to highlight the global opportunities provided by the largest and fastest growing potential export markets

Achievements

Research study completed to allow further policy analysis by the LEPs and inform their on-going support to businesses in the region.
